The Bison JV men were tough enough on Thursday evening. They started things off with an 80-yard runback by Gustavo Montano. It was called back on a penalty, but the Purple and Gold had sent a message: This is OUR field.
David Rodriguez ran for a first and Travis Cunningham scored on a 40-yard scamper for a 6-0 lead.
LHS bobbled the kickoff which followed, and Jessy Champion recovered for the Bison. Just a few plays later DJ Jackson scored on a 30- yard run, dragging defenders into the endzone. Charlie Herringer popped in for two on the PAT and BHS was up 14-0 with 7:34 left in the first quarter.
Drake Jones was the goto man for the Cougars in their first offensive series, but he and his teammates were met hard by the likes of Jacob Fahler, Herringer, Calvin Young, Rodrigquez, Harley Eakins and Ivan Rivas. Still, QB Terrance moved his team up the field and inside the ten-yard-line. On 4th down. BHS’ Alejandro Montano came through with a huge sack and the Bison took over.
BHS’s quarterback Austin Rayborn got his team out of the hole on a QB sneak, and from there the Bison drove 90 yards to pay dirt with runs by Rodriguez, Cunningham, Jackson, Rayborn, Young and Herringer. Herringer finished the charge with an 11-yard touchdown run and Rodriguez added a PAT kick to put the Bison up by three TDs, 21-0.
Carranza and Jones teamed up for a LHS first down. Rodriguez and Justin Ansley backed the Cougars up with a big quarterback sack and the drive stalled. On fourth down, the Cougars tried a pass to #33 in the endzone, but it was batted down by the Bison defender and the Bison offense took over and were driving again as time ran out in the half.
BHS held Leon to threeand out, but Buffalo fumbled the punt right back to the Cougars. They mounted a drive, survived another fumble and got a break on a punt when BHS was penallized for running in to the kicker. The wheels finally came off in the Bison end of the field and LHS’ punt backed the Bison up to their own 9-yard-line.
From there Herringer had a gain of 15 yards, but suffered a broken ankle on the tackle. Jackson, Keith Carter and Rayborn each picked up first downs. The Bison’s final touchdown came on a 24- yard QB keeper by Ty Tollett.
On the PAT attempt, LHS’ Ashton Noey caught the short kick in the air and almost ran it back for a score. Travis Cunningham and Austin Courmier finally ran him down just short of the goal line.
BHS finished on top, 27 to 0.
