O.I.S.D. names students of the month
Victoria Hill
The Oakwood School Board met briefly last night. First on the agenda was naming the first 2009-2010 "Students of the Month". For the Elementary, that was sixth grader Victoria Hill. The High School representative was senior J.P. Hicks. Superintendent Richard Scoggin will present these students with a certificate honoring their outstanding work in school and dedication to the community. Jocelyn Williams was named Junior Rotarian for the month of September.
Also on the agenda was the Superintendent's report. As of Friday, O.I.S.D. has 230 students enrolled with approximately 97.78% in regular attendance. As we are on the brink of flu season, this is a good rate. Scoggin encouraged the board to support the students by attending various events.
Scoggin proudly announced that both the High School and Junior High football teams were doing extremely well. The High school team has only lost one game. The Junior High is undefeated. Scoggin also bragged on the girls volleyball teams.

Board President Mack Botard took over for the rest of the meeting. Discussions included the approval of financial statements and tax collections. The first bus payment has been made in the amount of $42,616. Debbie Stanford gave the tax collection report. With 96% of taxes being collected, that comes out to be $1,652,578. This is well above last year's numbers. The FIRST (Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas) report has come in. Due to the management of school finances and the increase to a "commended" rating by the State, Oakwood has now received a "Superior Achievement" rating, the highest possible.
A $1500 donation was accepted from the Oakwood Alumni Association. This money is earmarked for the Accelerated Reading Program.
Botard, with the help of Scoggin, informed the Board that the Appraisal District had made changes to the poll box locations again. This amendment to last month's order was that the District has now UNconsoladated the Flo box. Flo residents will now be able to vote exactly the same way they always have. Early voting for the Bond Election will begin October 19-October 30 in the Administration Building . Extended hours will be offered. Regular voting will be November 3 at the district locations.
