Lone Star Community Center plans busy fall season

By Sherry Matney

The Lone Star Community Center held its regular meeting on September 7, 2009. The primary focus was planning the fall activities.

On September 19, Noni Ward and Mary Trull will hold a bake sale at Brookshire Brothers to raise funds for the Halloween Carnival. Those interested in baking for the event will meet at the Center on Thursday, 9-18, to make baked goods. Others may be prepared at home and donated by various community cooks. Monies raised will be used to buy candy and prizes for the Carnival.

The Halloween Carnival is traditionally held on the Saturday night before Halloween but this year the holiday falls on Saturday. Originally the plan was to hold the Carnival on the 31st but after consideration it was decided to move the Carnival to October 24. The logic was that several churches in the area have Halloween activities and since the Community Center is a distance to drive, members felt that The Center could not compete with activities in town. Food will begin being served at 5:00 p.m. and games will begin at 6:00 p.m.

President Earl Hill Moore reported that the Horn family will organize the annual Turkey Shoot which will be held on November 17. Members voted to authorize Moore to purchase a rifle to be raffled on and before the Turkey Shoot. Both hams and turkeys will be prizes for the event.

On November 21 the Center will host its third Jamboree of the year. Nick Watson is in charge of this shindig and has the talent in place. Although there are several groups who will be on the programs, he says there is room for walk-on talent at the beginning of the evening. Hamburgers will be served beginning at 5:00 p.m.

The community Christmas Party will be on December 5, headed by Sherry Matney. Entertainment will be various guests and the meal will be a covered dish.
