Mayor of Jewett declares a proclamation for Fall Frolic Day

By Sherry Matney

Hosted by the Jewett Area Chamber of Commerce, the City of Jewett will hold its 27th Fall Frolic on October 10, 2009. Kristi Vandergriff with the JACC was on hand to explain some of the plans for the big event. A street dance is planned for the first time this year, along with a rock wall for climbing, a jousting ring and a silent auction. A parade is planned for 8:30 a.m. Proceeds will go to the Raise the Roof campaign to replace the roof on the Jewett Civic Center. The Chamber is within $10,000 of its goal.

The City of Jewett held its regular City Council meeting on September 14, 2009 at the Jewett City Hall. In addition to Mayor Judi Kirkpatrick, Aldermen Jimmy Mills, Tammy Coulter, Bessie Woodall and John Sitton were present.

Mayor Kirkpatrick opened bids from three area banks to consider bank depository bids. The bids came from Farmers State Bank in Jewett, State Bank of Jewett, and Citizens State Bank in Buffalo. Since this was the first time the Council had been made aware of the bids, Kirkpatrick suggested making copies for the Aldermen and called a special meeting for September 22 at 6:30 p.m. The final decision will be made at that meeting since a bank must be selected by the end of this month.

The Council voted to approve the sale of property owned by JEDC to Cattle Country. John Sitton asked about the need for the Council to approve the sale and Kirkpatrick explained that the City must approve any JEDC transaction. Cattle County plans to build a new facility on the property.

Kirkpatrick then presented an amendment to the fiscal year 2008/2009 budget. She said there was approximately $100,000 which could be moved to cover some accounts that have come up short. John Sitton suggested that the Council be allowed to review the accounts and moved action to the special meeting to be held on September 22.

The interim Police Chief then made his monthly police report explaining that he has been in contact with the Conroe Police Department concerning patrol vehicles. Conroe Police Department retires their cars at around 60,000 miles and there is a possibility that Jewett could purchase one for about $5,000 or $6,000. The cars currently being driven by the Jewett Police Department have high mileage and need to be replaced.

The Jewett Police Department will host a National Night Out on Tuesday, October 6, 2009. It will be held at the Jewett Community Center from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Representatives from local and county government as well as community groups will be on hand.
