Straight from The Horse’s Mouth

Laura St. John

Who only knows how many of my mistakes have made it into print? My editors usually let them fly and let you tell me about them!!! Some I would make - regardless - others are the result of an *over-busy life, like many of you. Mistakes happen.

On September 1st I said that a portion of the proceeds from our book sale will go to the Disabled American Veterans of Leon County. Our DAV serves all surrounding counties, not just Leon. Joyce Stark, one of the devoted volunteers, drives their van and takes Vets to their medical appointments. They are asking for donations to help replace the old van; you may have seen the donation jars placed in businesses around town. THM appreciates our Veterans and will be pleased to help them with some of the proceeds of our sale this Friday and Saturday.

On September 8th I misspoke and said our art group will meet on the 17th. I hope my error did not affect too many of you. The writer's group meets this week, the artist's group met last week. We have a bit of an altered schedule with football season throwing passes into our plans. Check our web site www.thehorsesmouth. squarespace.com to find the facts.

Many folks do not realize there is gain in apology for both parties. The victim gets the opportunity to forgive and the culprit gets the chance to be a better person. It takes guts to apologize and it isn't always easy. There are creative ways to say it in a letter, with flowers, or an appropriate gift. (Chocolate is always good!) It should be spoken as quickly after the hurt as possible and can be said in simple words. Nothing fancy, just, "Hey, I was wrong."

*Remember that you will negate your apology if you put a ‘but’ on the end of it or if you make excuses. Simply apologize and leave it at that. Glenn and I are very busy right now, yet blaming anything else for errors flubs it. So, here it goes: "I'm sorry. I messed up. I will try harder to put only correct info in my column." Whew, that wasn't too bad!

We're full throttle with football season, both with the Buffalo Bison and going to my son's games. He played at Cowboy Stadium on Labor Day. What a thrill that was! We have the "What In The World Is Going On?" discussion group Tuesday, Writers Thursday, the book sale Friday and Buffalo Stampede parade and more book sale Saturday. Make no excuse, we have a lot going on and there is no apology for that!
