Wendy Martin moves to Fairfield as Post Master

by Vanessa Goodwyn

Wendy Martin (L) is relinquishing her role as OIC at the Buffalo Post Office to co-worker Sheila McWilliams (R). Van’Go’photo Wendy Martin (L) is relinquishing her role as OIC at the Buffalo Post Office to co-worker Sheila McWilliams (R). Van’Go’photo Wendy Mensch Martin, who has been serving as the Officer In Charge (OIC) at the Buffalo Post Office since October 2008, has been named as the new Post Master in Fairfield. Martin's new post became effective August 29.

Martin already has eleven years of experience with the postal service. She started in Teague as a part time city carrier, then transferred to clerk there. She was next the OIC in Streetman and then the Post Master in Donie. That was followed by a stint as OIC in Jewett, and she became Post Master there in 2005. She came to Buffalo last October when Jackye Penney moved to OIC in Teague.

Wendy grew up in Fairfield, graduating from high school there in '94, so she will, in a way, be going Home when she takes on her new role. "When Fairfield came up I applied, but I didn't expect to get it!" Martin admitted. "It's bittersweet," she added, explaining, "I LOVE it here. The pople on this staff are so good, it's awesome, and I'm sad to have to leave them."

The Fairfield post office will be a closer commute for Martin. She was married just last May, and she and her husband Lance and her eightyear old son Garrett live in Teague.

Sheila McWilliams of Teague will be taking on the duties of OIC in Buffalo, a position she has already been in training for under Martin. "She's already been filling in for me, and I will help as much as I can," Martin explained. The OIC, like a post master, is responsible for payroll, ordering, and all the paperwork involved in running the post office. McWilliams, who has been at the Buffalo post office for 4-1/2 years, will also continue her clerking duties, so Buffalo customers can still expect to see her gentle smile behind the counter.
