The Stampede is coming! The Stampede is coming! Yes, there is a stampede coming up -- but only newcomers to our area would hear that as cause for alarm. Actually, the 2009 Buffalo Stampede to be held Friday and Saturday, September 18- 19 at Harriman Park promises to be a whole lot of fun for the entire community. This is the 30th year for the event and the Chamber of Commerce organizers are making a special effort to “do it up right”. There is definitely something for everyone this year. The Stampede has become a two-day event, and the fun will begin on Friday afternoon. A 42-Domino Tournament will begin at 4:00 at Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church. The Horseshoe Pitching Tournament also begins Friday and participants will enjoy a dinner on Friday evening. Vendors and buyers are also invited to the 6:00 dinner at the horseshoe pitching arena. (Call for directions). A new event this year is a 5-K and Kid’s Fun Run. Runners are invited to pre- register at the Chamber office during the next few weeks (903-322-5810) for a reduced rate. Race-day registration will being at 7:00 a.m. at the park, and the cost is $15. A 5-K covers 3.1 miles, and this one will be an out-and-back course along Star Route Road. 5-K runners (and walkers are welcome, too) receive a teeshirt and compete for medals within their age divisions and trophies for the top male and female finisher. Participation in the 1/2 Mile Kids-K is free and all runners get a ribbon. The Chamber is really encouraging more participation in the parade this year. The parade line-up starts at 8:00 at Buffalo High School. A highlight of the parade will, of course, be the winners of the Buffalo Stampede Pageant which is coming up on Saturday, September 12 at the Buffalo High School Auditorium. The younger beauties and handsome boys (ages 0 - 5) will be featured in the morning session which begins at 10:00 a.m. The evening session at 5:00 will showcase girls 6-19 and end with the crowning of Miss Buffalo Stampede 2009. Fans of American Heavy Metal will want to come out for this year’s Car Show. Buffalo Animal Hospital is proud to be a sponsor of the Stampede’s annual Dog Show and they invite you to come by their booth, which will feature goody bags, prizes and interesting information for you and your pet. You will certainly want to bring your checkbook and pick up some bargains at the auction which is scheduled to begin at 1:00. Local businesses are donating goodies, so there will be some great buys -- and you are helping grow your city by supporting the Chamber of Commerce. Of course, vendors, booths, great food, kids games and entertainment will continue throughout the day. Mark your family calendar now to join your friends and neighbors at this year’s Buffalo Stampede. For more details, contact the Chamber at 903-322- 5810. |
