Lady Bison shine in Centerville Tournament

A total of four points separated the first and third place teams in pool play Thursday at the Centerville Tournament. Buffalo defeated Goodrich, but lost to Normangee and Fairfield in three set matches. By virtue of records, Buffalo was seeded third from their pool and entered the challenger’s tournament on Saturday. The Lady Bison did not drop a set on their way to the championship win. Buffalo defeated district opponent Onalaska, North Zulch and Grapeland for the first place plaque. Onalaska rebounded to claim the consolation plaque, and North Zulch won the third place contest over Mildred.

Meredith Shaw and Karlee Ferguson combined for twenty-five service points and twelve aces to lead Buffalo to a 25-12, 25-10 win over Goodrich Thursday morning. Kaila Grissett, though nursing a sore shoulder, led the team with seven kills. Kylan Ferguson and Brooke Trahan dished fourteen assists during the match.
The second match of the day pitted Buffalo and Normangee. Buffalo won the first game 26-24, but dropped the second 16-25. Normangee won the third game 26-24. Shaw served for eight points while Jordyn Briscoe and Karlee Ferguson each served for six. Briscoe and Desiree Worthy nailed eight and seven kills, respectively. Worthy, Kylan Ferguson and Shaw combined for six blocks. Lindsey McGill scored nineteen digs, and Briscoe added ten.

The last pool play match went to Fairfield, 20- 25, 25-8, 26-24. Tristan Brewer and Karlee Ferguson each served for eight points. Briscoe led the team with eight kills and Trahan dished eight assists. McGill managed eight digs while Grissett and Briscoe contributed seven and six, respectively.
Action started off Saturday with Buffalo pitted against district opponent Onalaska. The Lady Bison won matching sets 25-16, 25-16 to advance to the semifinals. Shaw served for nine points, including a six point run to start the match. Kylan Ferguson served for seven points, and Trahan added six. Brewer served for five points. Grissett led the team in kills with eight. Shaw and Karlee Ferguson downed four kills each. Trahan and Kylan Ferguson distributed sixteen assists. McGill provided eleven digs while Shaw and Grissett dug up five each.
The Lady Bison defeated North Zulch in the semi-final contest, 25-21, 25-20. Karlee and Kylan Ferguson served for seven points each, and Lindsey McGill served for six. Grissett landed five kills while Shaw and Worthy each nailed four. Kylan Ferguson and Trahan provided fifteen assists. McGill, Shaw and Grissett combined for twenty one digs.
Buffalo met Grapeland in the tournament finals. Although Buffalo got off to an early lead, the scrappy Sandiettes would not concede without a fight. The Lady Bison outlasted Grapeland 25- 20, 25-19 for the first place plaque. McGill led the team with ten service points. Shaw served for six, and Brewer served five. Trahan and Karlee Ferguson each served for three points, and Kylan Ferguson added two. Grissett pounded out ten kills to lead the offense. Shaw managed three kills. Kylan Ferguson downed one kill, but assisted on ten others. Trahan dished seven assists. Worthy scored on a kill and a block. McGill also headed up the digs department with fourteen. Shaw provided nine, and Grissett added six. Karlee Ferguson tallied four.
“This was a great way to wrap up our tournament season,” said head coach Lori Shaw. “The girls battled, and overcame some obstacles to finish first. I’m looking forward to entering district play.”
The Lady Bison will travel to Corrigan-Camden on Tuesday before hosting Hearne on Friday.
