BISD Board sets budget, tax rate
      The BISD School Board held a public hearing prior to their August meeting in order to invite discussion of the 2009-10 proposed school budget and tax rate.

Coleman-Vaughn Wedding Announcement
      Miss Rachel Coleman and Mr. Aaron Vaughn were united in marriage on August 23, 2009. The bride is the daughter of Wayne Coleman of Streetman, Texas and LeAnn Cholopisa of Tehuacana, Texas. The groom is the son of Mike and Brenda Vaughn of Buffalo. The couple will reside in Texas with their three children Devin, Jayde and Jaedon Vaughn.

CISD Board adopts new budget with no new taxes
      A public hearing was held August 26, 2009 at 7 :00 p.m. to discuss the proposed budget and tax rate for 2009- 2010. Superintendent Cathy Nichols explained the Texas Education Agency’s legal requirements for the budget, explaining that the budget is based on estimates of expenditures and revenue.

BISD welcomes new teachers
      Buffalo Independent School District did not experience a large turnover in their teaching staff this year, but did pick up a few new teachers at each campus. In addition to the staffers introduced in earlier issues of the Buffalo Press -- Coach Vic Wheeler and BES computer teacher Rosie Ard -- the district has added these educators.

BHS math department picks up experienced educator
      When Marilyn Hilliard decided to rethink her decision to retire from teaching, it was a lucky day for BISD. Hilliard brings twenty-six years of experience to her new position in the mathematics department at BHS, where she will be teaching calculus, pre-calculus and geometry.

Bienvenidos, Cindy Epps
      BHS has a new Spanish teacher, Cindy Epps, who comes to us from Palestine High School. She will be teaching Spanish I, II and III. Cindy and her husband Jack live at Red Lake, near Butler, but they already have a connection in Buffalo as owners of the Four Jacks Gun Shop.

Grace Gutierrez joins elementary staff
      Things are moving fast for Grace Gutierrez. This spring she completed her university studies, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in education with a teaching certification for Early Childhood through 8th grade. In early summer she married fellow East Texas Baptist grad Justin Gutierrez.

Wright joins BHS Special Education staff
      Sheryl Wright has joined the special education department at Buffalo High School, coming to Buffalo from Mexia ISD where she taught at the elementary school for the past twelve years. Asked to name her strong suite in the classroom, Wright considered and responded, “I am patient, and I think that’s important with these kids.”

Sims to teach district’s youngest students
      Mexia native Samantha Sims joins the BISD staff this fall, where she will be teaching two classes of Pre-K students -- one morning class and another in the afternoon. She will be assisted by aide Santa Soria, and is looking forward to working with the district’s other Pre-K teacher, Janeen Cobb.

Porter joins BISD staff
      Buffalo Junior High and the athletic department at BISD have picked up an experienced educator, Blake Porter, who is coming back to teaching after a hiatus. He will be teaching seventh grade science and his coaching assignments will include 8th grade volleyball, 9th grade volleyball and football and golf at the high school.

Megan Rodell comes home to BHS
      Seems like Megan Rodell can’t get enough of Buffalo. After attending BISD throughout her school years, the 2003 BHS alumna wrapped up her studies at Sam Houston by doing her student teaching here in Buffalo.       When John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln in 1865, he not only found a dark corner in American history; he may have became a part of Texas history, too. An enduring legend in Granbury, Texas, says a man known as John St. Helen worked as a bartender at A.P. Gordon’s saloon. His true identity is still being debated in Hood County.
