Drought-related cattle deaths reported in South Texas
      COLLEGE STATION – Hot, dry weather continued for most of Texas, with South Texas still the hottest and driest, according to Texas AgriLife Extension Service personnel. It has been so hot and dry that ranchers are losing cattle, said Sammy Gavito, AgriLife Extension agent for Duval County, west of Corpus Christi.

2009 Cow Country Congress to convene
      The 2009 Cow Country Congress will be held on Friday, September 25, 2009 at the Corlay Farm & Cattle Co. located outside Huntsville in Dodge, Texas. The Cow Country Congress is an annual multi-county Beef & Forage Field Day conducted by the Extension Service offices of Walker, Madison, Houston, Trinity, Leon, Freestone and Anderson Counties.

Samples due for hay show
      Hay Samples are being accepted for the 2009 Leon County Hay Show. The Annual Leon County Hay Show will be held on Monday, October 26, 2009 at the Buffalo Civic Center. The deadline for submitting samples is Friday, October 2, 2009. Samples should not be taken from the outer 4 to 6 inches of round bales. Samples from square bales should come out of the middle of the bale.

Several questions must be addressed before a landowner can make the decision of what enterprise will be most profitable and best suited for their land. Both feasibility and owner preference must be determined before a plan can start to take shape.

      Applications for emergency farm loans for losses caused by freezing temperatures and frost on April 7, 2009, are being accepted at the Farm Service Agency (FSA) office located in Franklin, Farm Loan Manager, Nathan P. Philipello said today.

Paws and Pals offers obedience classes
      Paws and Pals, the 4-H group for kids who love dogs, is sponsoring basic obedience classes beginning Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - October 20, 2009. Classes will be held at the Harriman Park pavilion in Buffalo starting at 5:30pm. All dogs must be at least 6 months of age, have current vaccinations and a stable temperament for working in a group environment.

RRC production statistics and allowables for September 2009
      AUSTIN -- The Texas average rig count as of July 17 was 355, representing about 38 percent of all active land rigs in the United States. In the last 12 months, total Texas reported production was 348 million barrels of oil and 7.6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Texas natural gas production represents approximately 29 percent of total U.S. natural gas demand.

     AUSTIN – (Aug. 24, 2009) For the week ending Aug. 22, 2009, feeder cattle price trends at Texas auctions were mostly steady to 5.00 higher with a few drought areas being steady to 3.00 lower, fed cattle traded 1.50 higher then last week. Corn ended the week lower on good growing weather in the Midwest and a mid-week decline in crude oil.

      All Leon County 4-H and FFA Members wishing to show swine projects at the Major Shows in Texas in 2010 need to order tags by contacting the Texas Agrilife Extension Service at 903.536.2531 by Sept 18, 2009. Each tag will cost $10.00 and the tags will not be ordered until payment is received. Members may order by mail by sending payment to the Leon County 4-H P.O.
