City of Oakwood sets 12% tax increase

      After announcing the intention to increase the tax, the Oakwood City Council was required to hold a special meeting Monday to answer any questions by the tax payers. The only citizen to bring questions to the Council was Glenn Barrilleaux of Barrilleax Construction on Hwy 79. As a business owner in Oakwood, he questioned what this increase would mean for him.

      The service this morning was extremely enjoyable as we got to hear David and Karen Garrett, musical evangelists, on their 40th wedding anniversary. They not only sang for the morning service but during lunch as well. Next week starts the new church year and all positions are filled (though some are filled with busy people.)

Oakwood welcomes new teachers

      Thursday was "Meet the Teachers" night for O.I.S.D. parents. Superintendent Richard Scoggin began the evening with a short message to parents and students. He took a moment to speak of the impressive report the school received after last year's Taks scores results came in, before explaining that this was not "Open House" and that there would be one soon.

Grand Re-Opening for the Hair Barn in Jewett

     The Hair Barn owned by Brandi Stevens outgrew the 720 square foot building in Jewett and they built a new 1800 square foot structure at 8366 Fm 39 North. Stevens had her grand opening on August 28th with a table full of food for customers to enjoy. Stevens graduated from Leon High in 2001 and opened her shop in Jewett 6 ½ years ago.
