The Buffalo Bison split up for a pair of scrimmages in the second week of pre-season football.
The JV team held an intrasquad scrimmage on Friday evening, since Rice had no JV squad. Divided roughly into older versus freshmen, the team was led on the field by quarterbacks Austin Rayborn and Ty Tollett.
The Varsity men faced off against Rice at Brewer Field on Saturday morning. Their scrimmage began with 15 defensive plays followed by 15 offensive plays. BHS’ first team defense denied the Bulldogs even a first down in the first series, with Jared Hawthorn leading the attack. Andrew Houston and Jacob Rodell had several good tackles as well. The secondary broke up several pass plays, with Jordan Canady knocking down one pass and Ryan Read pulling down an interception. Jonathan Cates contributed a fumble recovery later in the scrimmage.

When the Bison offense took the field, they too looked impressive, steadily racking up first downs and scoring often. They are depending heavily on a ground game, as Coach Mark Read ented running backs to choose from. The Bison saw big running plays from Aaron Bell, Aurelio Dominguez, and newcomer Zack Buhl. Freshman Jose Dominguez, taking his very first varsity snap, broke open on a quick trap up the middle and took it to the endzone. Esteban Espinoza fol-
lowed with another scoring run on the next play. Quarterback Jordan Canady displayed savvy running in the backfield on several occasions. Back-up QB Ryan Read also scrambled out of trouble, crossed the field and turned on “Read Speed” for paydirt. Kicker Rigo Andrade’s aim was true on two PAT attempts.

Coach Read did not try to hide a proud grin as his team left the field after the scrimmage. “I think I saw a bunch of kids that really wanted to compete. They were ready to compete and bang on somebody else for a change!”
