Volleyball season is off to a great start, and the Lady Bison brought home the first place trophy Saturday from the Challengers’ Bracket of the Grapeland Tournament. Eighteen schools participated in pool play Thursday and Friday before dividing into two brackets for Saturday. Buffalo won the title with wins over Latexo and Hubbard following a forfeit by Coolidge. More ... The Buffalo Bison split up for a pair of scrimmages in the second week of pre-season football. The JV team held an intrasquad scrimmage on Friday evening, since Rice had no JV squad. Divided roughly into older versus freshmen, the team was led on the field by quarterbacks Austin Rayborn and Ty Tollett. More ... The Lady Bison bit off more than they could chew last Tuesday when they took on AAAA Conroe Caney Creek for the season opener. All three levels of Lady Bison took it on the chin although the varsity club did win Game Two and competed well in the other three matches. More ... The Centerville Lady Tigers opened their volleyball season with a sweep of the Fairfield Lady Eagles on August 11 under new coach Dusty Crafton. More ... The Oakwood Lady Panthers lost to the Westwood Lady Panthers in their first game of the season, played at Westwood. Although disappointed by the loss, Assistant Coach Stephanie Lucio said she was encouraged by what she saw from her girls. “They did really well. We have a lot to work on, but they did really well being a 1A team going up against a 4A team. More ... The Centerville Tigers varsity and junior varsity looked good in a scrimmage against the state ranked Lovelady Lions at Centerville at 10:00 am Saturday August 15th. This was a controlled scrimmage as the offense had the ball for a set number of plays then the defense took the field. Several players looked good for the Tigers and the overall speed for the team looks improved over last years. More ... The Leon Lady Cougars opened their season with victories by the varsity and the junior varsity over the Groesbeck Lady Goats. More ... A large enthusiastic crowd of parents and friends jammed into the Tiger gym to meet the cheerleaders, football, and volleyball players for the new school year. The cheerleaders were introduced first and led the fans in some cheers. Then the coaches were recognized and they in turn introduced the players. The Tiger band provided the fans with some peppy songs. More ... |
