NRG employees donate two million dollars to local community
      JEWETT, TX; August 12, 2009—The Limestone Project Employees Fund (LPEF) has donated more than $2 million to local charities since being established in 1986. The fund is financed by contributions from Limestone Electrical Generating Station employees, matching donations from NRG Energy, Inc.’s (NYSE: NRG) Global Giving fund and the NRG Texas’ endowment fund.

Caleb Eagans earns black belt
      Thirteen year old Caleb Eagans who attends Leon Junior High completed testing and received his Junior Black Belt from the Buffalo Shorin- Ryu karate school on Sunday, August 9th. The test lasted nearly four hours and included knowledge of Shorin-Tyu karate, basics, self-defense, katas and sparing against students and other black belt holders.

Correction
      In our August 11th issue the Buffalo Press reported that Joni Tubb, who owns and operates 'The Centerville Flower Shop', “grew up in Centerville and graduated form Centerville High School.” Tubb did spend many of her summers and week-ends in Centerville where her parents owned property but she attended school and graduated from Aldine High School.

Leon School Board votes to give teachers and staff a bonus
      The air in the Leon Administration board room was lighter than it had been in past meeting. Superintendent Jay Winn and his team had accomplished something that few thought would happen, in a year of conflict and turmoil. All three campuses and the district as a whole received a “Recognized” status for TAKS scores. That made everybody happy.

City of Jewett approves 3.4% tax rate increase
      The Jewett City Council meeting on Monday, August 10, 2009 was going smooth as glass. Agenda items were approved and it appeared that the meeting would adjourn quickly and then the item for the tax rate increase came up and things went to a crawl if not a dead stop.
