Chute ‘n the Bull
      Cull cows represent between 15 and 30 percent of a cow-calf herd's revenue, but relatively little attention is given to cull cow marketing. Most cow-calf producers traditionally sort and sell cull cows in the fall when prices are at or near the seasonal low. However, alternative management systems and timing of cull cow marketing may increase net revenues for the cow-calf operation.

Lamb and Goat Tags
      All Leon County 4-H and FFA Members wishing to show lamb or goat projects at the Major Spring 2010 Shows in Texas need to order tags by contacting the Texas Agrilife Extension Service at 903.536.2531 by August 24, 2009. Each tag will cost $10.00 and the tags will not be ordered until payment is received.

     AUSTIN – (Aug. 3, 2009) For the week ending Aug. 1, 2009, feeder cattle price trends at Texas auctions were mixed, from $4 lower per hundredweight to $4 higher compared to a week earlier.       COLLEGE STATION – Most of Texas received a little to a lot of rain the first week of August. In Central Texas and parts of East Texas 2 to 3 inches was common, with isolated instances of from 8 to 10 inches, according to the National Weather Service (http://water.weather. gov/) and reports from Texas AgriLife Extension Service personnel.

Master Gardener Training Class visits horticulture facilities
      Members of the Texas Agrilife Extension Service Master Gardener Training Class have started with a field trip that gave an opportunity to see many innovative and instructive garden demonstrations. One of the stops was to the A&M Horticulture facili- ties. A few blocks from the main College Station campus, the Horticulture Department gardens are both beautiful and useful.

AARP meeting
      AARP meets Tuesday, August 18th at the Buffalo Civic Center before noon. Bring your favorite food for lunch. After lunch there will be reports from different committees and reminders of AARP participation in the September Stampede. The program for this month will be a quartet of singers from the Baptist Church of Jewett.
