High School athletes begin fall seasons

Van’Go’photo The fall sports -- football, volleyball and cross country track -- fired up this week. UIL regulations allowed team practices to begin on Monday, August 3. BHS volleyball teams pracice began first thing that morning. Football practice began at 5:00 p.m.. Monday afternoon, and the players move into pads on the 7th. The Purple and Gold scrimmage is set for Saturday morning the 8th at 10 a.m.

The 2009 Bison football program is off to a good start, with sixty players showing up for the first practice on Monday afternoon. Head Coach Mark Read expressed enthusiasm about the coming season. "We have good numbers -- we had sixty and it was a pretty good first day. I was really pleased with the first practice."

Senior Jordan Canady will be the returning starting quarterback and he brings three years' experience to the position.

Read acknowledged that the Bison again face a tough district schedule, but pointed out that Texas Football has Buffalo picked to go to the playoffs as the third place team in district. "It's been a long time since we've been picked that high," Coach Read added. The magazine also picked the Bison's final game of the season -- Buffalo versus New Waverly at Brewer Field -- as their Game of the Year for District 21AA.

Fans can get a first look at their 2009 Bison on Saturday morning, August 8, in the annual Purple and Gold Scrimmage. Play will begin at 10 a.m. at Brewer Field.
