Van’Go’photo The Leon County Commissioners Court met in regular session on Wednesday, July 29th. After an opening prayer by Lee Weiler of the All Around Cowboy Church in Jewett, Judge Byron Ryder and the commissioners jumped into an agenda which was rather lengthy but routine in nature.

The contract for the county's depository bank was up for renewal. Treasurer Phil Skelton explained that he had sent bid requests out to every bank in the county and received two bids: Citizens State Bank in Buffalo and Community National Bank & Trust of Texas. "I looked through these and recommend that you accept the bid from CSB as our depository," Skelton advised. The commissioners approved that bid.

A representative of the Leon County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, announced that they are donating a fineframed print of Arnold Frigerg's "Prayer at Valley Forge" to the county. The commissioners gratefully approved the donation, and where it will be displayed will be determined later.

After confirming that all requirements had been met, the court approved the final plat for Sean Land Company. Representative Tyson Henson happily collected the commissioners' signatures authorizing the new sub-division which will be located on Highway 7 East.

At the previous meeting of the court, representatives of Belt, Harris & Associates had presented the county's annual audit report for FY 2008. On Wednesday, after reviewing that information, the commissioners voted to approve the outside audit.

The recent audit had revealed that the court needed to name a person to be the Leon County Investment Officer. The commissioners voted to appoint the County Treasurer, by position, to serve.

Election Administrator Robin Shafer announced vacancies in Republican judges after Ed Hoep (Precinct 5, in Flynn) and John Lucas (Precinct 8 in Jewett) stepped down. Shafter was authorized to fill those vacancies.

Commissioner Joey Sullivan was again selected as Leon County's nominee for the Leon Central Appraisal District Board of Directors. The court also voted to appoint Colonel James Wallace, Commissioner Dean Player and Bobbye Bullock to serve on the BVCOG Board of Directors.

At Commissioner Sullivan's recommendation, the hours of operation for the Precinct 1 waste station were set at 7:30 - 3:30 on both Wednesday and Saturday of each week. That dump is located on Highway 75 just north of Centerville.

The Commissioners again discussed the need for a court interpreter for county court proceedings, and set a pay schedule of $15/hour with a two hour minimum.
