Hot! Hot! Hot Summer!
      The early part of Summer ‘09 has been one for the record books. With little precipitation and plenty of relentless sunshine, adjectives like “brutal” and “exhausting” pepper discussions of the weather -- and it has been the main topic of discussion. The heat has put crops, livestock and even area wildlife under stress. There have been reports of higher-than-usual activity by the snake population.

Pennies from heaven
      Sitting on my front porch Thursday evening watching faint flickers of lightning in the distance, the thought occurred, “Wouldn’t it be nice if we got some rain.” The wind changed and blew from the north, cooling down the 100+ day. Sonny Lathrop, long time Flo citizen, keeps up with rainfall in our community and his numbers reflect that we are far behind average. This statement can’t be a surprise since the pastures are brown and the stock tanks are extremely low.

Wade Brewer -- taking your requests and dedications
      There's a new face -- or rather, voice -- gracing the local airwaves on Saturday evenings, and it belong to Buffalo's own Wade Brewer. Wade's request and dedication show on KBHT's Big Country Legends (93.5) debuted five weeks ago, and according to Program Director Dave Wheaton, it has been well-received.

Marquez turns out for Karen Jones’ benefit
      The place was the Marquez Volunteer Fire Station and the day was Saturday, July 18. Dozens of people sat around the station, on a relatively pleasant day (not too hot) discussing the week’s events and whatever was on their minds. Some friends cooked catfish, fries and beans and other friends bought and ate them. Still others baked cakes, pies and cookies while more friends and acquaintances bought them at auction.

Aggie counsellors retreat in Buffalo
      How many Aggies does it take to welcome transfer students? Well, twelve Texas A&M upperclassmen gathered in Buffalo this week to prepare for their role as TCamp counsellors during an upcoming orientation session in August. They spent the weekend bonding and planning the activities which they will use to introduce incoming junior college transfers to the traditions and challenges they will meet when they join the A&M student body this fall.
