Straight from The Horse’s Mouth
You know it’s hot outside when the national weather map describes the states as being rare, medium and welldone. And you know you live in the “well-done” region when the seats of your car can iron out the wrinkles on your backsides.
I used to have a little friend from Mississippi who drawled “Hawwwt, ain’t it”. Although we weren’t allowed to say “ain’t”, it’s one of those quotes our family picked up many years ago and have used a lot this summer.
Here are some tips to stay cool: 1. Wear white or very light colors. You may need sunglasses to prevent blindness from the glare. Or you could pare it down to a basic fig leaf, for which many of us will also require sunglass- es. 2. Stay hydrated. Feeling tired or thirsty is a symptom of dehydration which can be serious. Keep ahead of it by sipping water or juice all day. 3. On the hottest of days go out and do your errands. Take advantage of businesses that have the best air conditioning. 4. Get a cool book from THM (it’s nice and cool in here!) and a big chunk of ice from Tom’s Mini Mart or Gillium’s Grocery. Put the ice in a little kiddy pool (or a big tub, or even an ice chest) in a shady spot and pull up a lawn chair. Put your bare feet on that chunk of ice and don’t drip your popsicle on your book. Even though it’s hawwwt, remember to laugh a lot, love a lot, and live easy. Don’t Worry, Be Happy.

Also, remember to check on elderly friends and neighbors to be sure they have adequate methods of beating the heat.
Of course, it’s simple to stay refreshed in the Caribbean. With the highs in the mid 80’s, a constant trade wind, and the crystal clear ocean to float upon, beating the heat doesn’t get much easier.
