CISD accepts a new sports medicine program

By Sherry Matney

The Centerville ISD Board of Trustees held its regular meeting at the Centerville High School Library on July 8, 2009. Board members in attendance were Danny Lacey, Charles Nash, Joe Langley, Mike Asby, Craig Smith, Tuffy Loftin and Kathy Gresham.

Superintendent Cathy Nichols discussed the change in the athletic trainer program. ETMC has provided an athletic trainer once a week for the last ten years at a cost of $5000; however, ETMC is no longer offering the program. Nichols explained how beneficial the program has been providing care for injured athletes. Physicians Centre is offering a sports medicine program with a trainer coming to the school twice a week and covering events as scheduling permits. The coverage will be better for the same cost.

A staff development waiver was approved for mathematics and science. The waiver allows the district to conduct additional staff training for mathematics and science strategies aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills in lieu of a maximum of two days of student instruction.

A waiver for a modified schedule for TAKS testing days was approved. This waiver allows the district to modify schedule of classes on TAKS testing days during the current school year to reduce interruptions during testing periods. The district has utilized this waiver for many years, allowing 12th grade students who are not testing to arrive at 11 a.m. This allows more teachers to be test administrators, thus creating smaller test groups.

Superintendent Nichols informed the Board of the resignations of Demond Denman and Gene Darby.

The Board approved a contract for Keith Thomas as a teacher/coach. Upon the recommendation of Special Education Director Ralph Carter, Tracy Harrison was approved as an Intervention Specialist for the Leon County Special Education Coop and Kimberly Blackwell was approved as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology.

Assistant Superintendent Carole Dickey presented the Second Quarter Investment Report which was approved by the Board.
