At 83 years young, Mabel Lucielle Smith is a vibrant resident of the city of Oakwood. Lucielle was born and raised here. She went to school here and got married in her early 20’s to her high school sweetheart. Even though she loved her friends and family, she felt that she was missing something. More ... Ray and Mary Steelman, residents of the Smith’s Crossing neighborhood since 1992, have plenty to celebrate this month. On Saturday, July 11th, Ray will be installed as the Worshipful Master at Buffalo’s Masonic Lodge #554. The next week, Ray and Mary will celebrate their 59th anniversary on July 19th. Asked what they will do to recognize that date, Mary said they have nothing big planned, but added, “As long as I’ve got him and keep him, I’m doing good -- and I’m GOING to keep him!” More ... A quorum of members of the BISD School Board met in special session on June 30, 2009 to deal with a brief agenda of personnel-related items. The Board discussed and approved Local DEC which dealt with the district's policy on compensation and benefits of leaves and absences. Following that, the Board was advised of the resignation of Tracy Harrison, who is leaving her teaching and coaching position at BHS to accept a position with the Leon County Special Education Cooperative. Nonprofit organizations exist to help people and better communities, but where you live can make a significant difference when it comes to getting help from charities. A child that lives in Houston has a world of help and resources available to them and their family. Unfortunately, the story is far different for children living in less populated areas. In Harris County, there are 10,868 registered charities. In Leon County, there are 65 and only 24 made over $25,000 in annual gross receipts in 2008 according to the National Center for Charitable Statistics. More ... Copper Creek Nursing Home resident Oma Baxter, who will celebrate her 100th birthday this week, was honored with a Buffalo City Council proclamation declaring July 3rd as “Ona Baxter Day”. More ... The day was a scorcher as is befitting east/central Texas in July. Vendors sold their goodies and the crowds waited for the real start of the day’s activities. And then the siren blasted signaling the start of the parade. Led by Old Glory and the Texas Flag the procession slowly made its way up Highway 75 from Centerville High School, turned right on Highway 7 and circled the Courthouse Square. Kids were allowed to run to the street to pick up candy and the floats passed by. More ... The Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) and the Associates of Vietnam Veterans of America (AVVA) Palestine Chapter 991 will hold their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 14th 2009, at 7:00 pm in the Disabled American Veterans Hall, located at 927 Gardner Drive, Palestine, Texas.
