Oakwood Awards Elementary Students

By Melissa Missildine

Oakwood Elementary held an end of the year awards program to let students and parents know how proud they are of all of the improvements they have made and acknowledge their accomplishments. Among those honored from 1st grade through 6th grade were 23 students for perfect attendance for the year, A/B Honor Roll for the year, and All A Honor Roll for the year.

Awards were also given to those students who were commended on their TAKS tests. This year, more students passed the TAKS tests and/or were commended than ever. The school was at a significant risk of being shut down by the state for poor tests scores in the past. Now, it is in the running for being commended by the state for the incredible jump in high test scores and perfect scores. Mr. Scoggin, the schools' superintendant, raved about how proud he was of the students and the parents. When Mr. Scoggin began at his position this year, he made a promise to all of the students from elementary to high school. He promised that he would take every student who passed all of their individual TAKS tests to Six Flags. On Monday, he made good on that promise. Two charter buses were loaded up and made the trip to Arlington to spend the day at Six Flags. The students are already making a wish list of possible places to go next year when they all pass the TAKS.

The Pre-K and Kindergarten classes were not left out! Each student was awarded with an individual certificate for things like Most Photogenic, Most Athletic, Fashion Diva, Most Outgoing, etc, as well as perfect attendance. After the awards ceremony, their parents were invited to a Hawaiian luau on the softball field. An unexpected rain shower may have gotten everyone wet but didn't damper the Aloha spirit. They simply moved the party indoors and made tropical fruit smoothies complete with tiny little umbrellas.
