Memories, joys and heartaches at the Leon Football Stadium
      The theme of the evening was lighthearted--Hollywood, with pictures of Elvis scattered around and plastic Oscars gracing each tent. But beneath the surface those who attended knew the purpose of the evening was as serious as life and death. This year’s Relay for Life was scheduled for May 1 but was postponed due to the Swine Flu scare. There were 27 teams from across the county who participated and each team had a maximum of 15 members. Probably because of the delay, attendance was less than last year but the faithful who came out were blessed in many ways.

Oakwood Awards Elementary Students
      Oakwood Elementary held an end of the year awards program to let students and parents know how proud they are of all of the improvements they have made and acknowledge their accomplishments. Among those honored from 1st grade through 6th grade were 23 students for perfect attendance for the year, A/B Honor Roll for the year, and All A Honor Roll for the year.

Two local highways to receive funding
      Austin, TX// Today, local State Representative Jim Dunnam, Chairman of the Select Committee on Federal Economic Stabilization Funding, announced that over $9.4 million will come to Leon County to improve local highways. The funds will allow the Texas Department of Transportation to repair FM 542 near Centerview and resurface sections of IH-45 between Buffalo and Centerville.

Centerville and Buffalo Eastern Star Chapters install officers
      In two separate but similar ceremonies the Centerville and Buffalo Eastern Star Chapters installed new officers for the upcoming year. Both ceremonies were beautiful, formal and ritualistic with many of the same individuals serving in both chapters. The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world that both men and women can join. It was established in 1850 by Rob Morris, a lawyer and educator from Boston, Massachusetts, who had been an official with the Freemasons.
