The theme of the evening was lighthearted--Hollywood, with pictures of Elvis scattered around and plastic Oscars gracing each tent. But beneath the surface those who attended knew the purpose of the evening was as serious as life and death. This year’s Relay for Life was scheduled for May 1 but was postponed due to the Swine Flu scare. There were 27 teams from across the county who participated and each team had a maximum of 15 members. The GLORY BOUND SINGERS will be performing at the Shiloh Community Center on Saturday, June 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. The meal for the evening will be hamburgers, chips, a drink and homemade ice cream. The All-District softball team selections have been announced and BHS’ young Lady Bison team grabbed a huge share of the honors in District 21AA, including one of the district superlatives. Sophomore shortstop Jordyn Briscoe, who tormented opponents all year by snagging would-be hits out of mid-air, earned the title of Defensive Player of the Year. Four Lady Bison were selected to the First Team All District: Seniors Kayla Morris (first base) and Jami Davis (centerfield), and sophomore pitcher Rachel Morris and catcher Jennifer Pate. More...

AUSTIN – (June 8, 2009) For the week ending June 6, 2009, feeder cattle prices at Texas auctions were mostly steady to $6 lower per hundred-weight. A few locations were $2 higher on offerings weighing less than 500 pounds. Fed cattle prices were lower as beef values continued to drop. Cotton and wheat prices declined because of weak global demand and a stronger U.S. dollar. Corn prices were supported by higher crude oil and ongoing concerns about weather in the Midwest Corn Belt. Cattle tuberculosis (TB) has been confirmed in a west Texas dairy that has been quarantined since April when some cattle in the herd responded to a TB test being conducted prior to a sale. (The sale was cancelled.) The cattle TB diagnosis was confirmed at the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa, where M. bovis, or cattle TB bacteria, was grown or “cultured” from tissues that had been collected during the necropsy of the test-positive cattle.
