BHS' Mims leads off... The 98th Annual State Track and Field Meet was hosted in Austin on June 5th and 6th at Mike Meyer's Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas. The Lady Bison track team wrapped up a banner year with a fifth place finish in the 800 meter relay at the state meet.
Buffalo's juniors Shanequae Mims, Desiree Worthy, Brooke Trahan, and Kaila Grissett combined for their best performance of the year to points at the State Meet. Freshman Kelsey Canady served as alternate for the foursome.
Mims led off for the Lady Bison, and handed off to Worthy. On the third leg, Trahan took the baton and ran her best split of the season, picking off two runners and getting the Lady Bison back in the race before passing the baton to anchor Grissett. Grissett moved the Lady Bison up another spot and was closing on fourth place at the finish line. The Lady Bison team finished the 800M in 1:45.39, trimming almost half a second off of their previous best time which was at the Regional prelims.
Region 1 representatives took gold and bronze in the race. Crane was clocked at 1:44.08 while Clyde came in third in 1:44.59. Wallis Brazos, the meet winner from Region 4, earned silver. Alvord and Paul Pewitt, both from Region 2, finished on either side of Buffalo in fourth and sixth. East Bernard, Region 4, and the Region 3 champion Garrison, came in seventh and eighth.

Isabel Reyes, a senior from Centerville, wrapped up a successful high school career with an eighth place finish in the 3200 meter run.
21AA was represented well at the state meet. Taylor also competed in volleyball, basketball and softball this year. Trinity's Shambrail Woods earned a silver medal in the 400 meter run. Woods was a bronze medalist in 2008. Candace Bourque of Franklin competed in the high jump while Rebecca Jenson of Elkhart completed a stellar high school career with showings in the 1600 meter run and 3200 meter run. She finished sixth in the 3200 meter and 7th in the 1600 meter relay. Elkhart's 1600 meter relay claimed sixth place with a 4:04.32 finish.

As freshmen, Worthy, Grissett and Trahan qualified for the regional meet in the 800-meter relay. As sophomores, the trio made the finals at Regional and finished fifth. As juniors, these young ladies along with Mims and Canady, medaled at the Regional meet and qualified for the State meet. If history proves true, these young ladies could very well be standing on the medal stand at the state meet this time next year.
