William B. "Smitty" Smith

Funeral services for William B. "Smitty" Smith, age 81, of Leona were held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 6th, at Walters Funeral Home Chapel in Centerville. Bro. Ed Houk and Bro. Tuffy Loftin officiated and interment followed in the Evans Chapel Cemetery east of Leona.

Mr. Smith was born February 28 1928 in Valley Mills , Texas to John and Ollie Rebecca (Riddle) Smith. He was known as "Smitty" from the time he was a small child. He served in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy.

Smitty was a general contractor and owner of Skrla Construction Company in Houston that built bridges and roads. Every bridge between Conroe and FM 1960 was built by his company. He built two sections of roadway of the Hardy Toll Road and several of the runways at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

He moved to Leona in 1976 from Pasadena, Texas. He always enjoyed being with his family. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Leona Baptist Church in Leona. In his younger years, as a church member in Pasadena, he taught RA's. His family remembers that he always enjoyed dancing. Even when he was in the nursing home he would dance with the nurses and nurses aides. Smitty died Thursday morning June 4, 2009 in Centerville. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara Smith; three brothers, C.C. "Lum" Smith, Raymond Smith and Leslie Smith; and four sisters, Gladys, Maggie "Little Mama", Evelyn and "Curly".

Survivors include three sons, Stephen Blanton Smith of Leona, Craig Alan Smith and his wife Verna of Leona and Walter Stevens Smith and his wife Mary of Centerville; one daughter Laura Michelle Hardee and her husband Kyle of Leona; one sister, Estelle Thiele of Valley Mills, TX; grandchildren, Kaitlin, Blanton and his wife Ashley, Stephanie and her husband Neil, Rebecca, Ashlee, Chance, Clay, Kandace, Kameron, and Kinsey and a great granddaughter, Carly Guerin.

Serving as pallbearers were Wesley Pennix, Brad Bradbury, Nathan Gilbert, Ronnie Dartez, Ronnie Miller and Bubba Oden.
