      AUSTIN - (June 1, 2009) For the week ending May 30, 2009, feeder cattle price trends at Texas auctions were mixed, with some locations steady to $3 higher per hundredweight and others steady to $3 lower. Buyers remain very selective as they fill orders from a seasonally smaller supply of available cattle. Fed cattle prices declined in response to lower beef prices.

      Heat stress can greatly impact cattle producers through decreased milk production and subsequent calf growth, decreased reproductive performance in cows and bulls, and decreased stocker and feeder performance. It has been estimated that heatrelated events in the Midwest have cost the cattle industry over $75 million in the past 10 years.

Texas crop, weather Texas High Plains dryland cotton in 'dire straits'
      COLLEGE STATION - While irrigated cotton in the Texas High Plains is in pretty good shape, the majority of dryland cotton is in "dire straits" because of lack of rainfall, said a Texas AgriLife Extension Service agronomist. "We just haven't had a good region-wide dryland rainfall," said Randy Boman, AgriLife Extension cotton agronomist, Lubbock.

Sometimes the grass is weedier on the other side of the fence
      OVERTON -- Farmers and ranchers are seeing more weeds - both common and unusual varieties - this year, according to Dr. Vanessa Corriher, Texas AgriLife Extension Service forage specialist based at Overton. Corriher said producers can expect to have more problems with weeds this year because high fertilizer costs limited their use in many pastures last year.

U.S. Grains Council sponsors Asian swine managers
