BHS miler Chad Nelson and the members of the Lady Bison mile relay team (Desiree Worthy, Kelsey Canady, Brooke Trahan and Kayla Grissett) taunt each other before facing off in a match race on Wednesday afternoon. The regional qualifiers are in training for the 2A Regional Track Meet in Whitehouse this week. Van'Go'photos The regional track meet may have been postponed, but BHS' milers found a unique way to push their training to a competitive level last week. The 400M Girls Relay team -- Desiree Worthy, Brooke Trahan, Kelsey Canady, and Kaila Grissett -- and miler Chad Nelson competed in a match race. After comparing their respective best times in the mile, the relay team spotted Nelson thirty seconds, then proceeded to chase him down. Only bragging rights were at stake, but the gender battle brought out the best in the competitors. It took a personal best effort by Nelson to hold off the challenge of the girls' anchor, Kaila Grissett, who almost caught him on the final straightaway. Asked what motivated his "kick" at the end of the race, Nelson confided (when he was able to catch his breath), "I couldn't let a girl pass me!"

The race may've been for fun, but Brooke and Desiree prove the ladies weren't playing when they hit the track...and (believe it or not) neither was Nelson. Regional qualifiers from Buffalo, Centerville and Leon will compete at the 2AA Regional Track Meet at Whitehouse, Texas on May 15 and 16. Oakwood will compete at the 1-A Regionals at Sam Houston State on May 18-19. The top two finishers in each event will qualify for the State Meet in Austin.
