City of Oakwood hires interim Police Chief

By Sherry and Paul Matney

Oakwood interim Police Chief Lewis Miller brings years of law enforcement experience to the table. Sherry's Shots Oakwood interim Police Chief Lewis Miller brings years of law enforcement experience to the table. Sherry's Shots The Oakwood City Counsel held a special called meeting on Tuesday, May 5, and voted to hire Lewis Miller for the interim police chief position. Miller was sworn in on May 6, 2009.

Miller began his law enforcement career with the Montgomery County Sheriff's department where he worked for one year. He then hired on with the Conroe Police Department where he remained for 21 years and retired in October 2008.

About five years ago Miller purchased 32 acres in the Keechi Community. After retirement he moved to his farm in Leon County where he raises Dexter cattle, a breed of miniatures. Because Miller feels blessed to have his place he calls it "Blessings Farm".

They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and this is true with Miller's family. He has a son, Scott Jones, 36, who is with the secret service and has guarded George Bush senior for several years. Travis Miller, 32, son number two, is with the Houston Police Department.

Miller says he has wanted to be in law enforcement all his life and is excited about his new assignment. But when he isn't keeping the peace Miller loves to restore old cars. Two of his favorites are a '57 Pontiac and a '55 Thunderbird.

There are 17 applicants for the position of Oakwood Police Chief, counting Miller. The Council is expected to fill the position permanently soon and Miller says he would be willing to remove the "interim" from his title if given the opportunity.
