Beer 'n wine and mixed drink sales to be a reality in Buffalo

by Vanessa Goodwyn

Residents of Buffalo have spoken, although in a relatively light turnout, to loosen the reins on the sale and consumption of alcohol in the city.

With the passing of Proposition #1, the city will now allow the sale of beer and wine in convenience stores and grocery stores for off-premise consumption. The measure passed by a vote of 181 to 160. The proposition does not open the door for liquor stores in the city limits.

The voters also passed Proposition #2 for "the legal sale of mixed beverages in restaurants by food and beverage certificate holders only." By definition the establishments must make more of their income on food sales than alcohol sales, so bars or taverns would not qualify. That measure passed by a margin of 186 to 151.
