TDA Market Recap May 4, 2009
      AUSTIN - (May 4, 2009) For the week ending May 2, 2009, feeder cattle price trends at Texas auctions were mixed, with some locations steady to $4 higher per hundredweight and others steady to $4 lower. Fed cattle prices were lower following a decline in boxed beef values. Cotton prices continue to rise on the prospects for a smaller U.S crop and rebounding global demand.

Good News, Bad News for Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Effort
      The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has released from temporary preventive quarantine more than 375,000 acres in Maverick, Dimmit and Webb counties. The preventive quarantine had been imposed on the three counties more than a year ago to prevent the spread of dangerous cattle fever ticks.

Preliminary Tests Indicate Cattle TB Infection in Texas Dairy
      Preliminary test results indicate that a dairy in west Texas is infected with cattle tuberculosis (TB). Cattle TB is caused by the Mycobacterium bovis bacteria and can cause internal lesions in animals. Milk from commercial dairies is pasteurized, killing bacteria with heat, so there is not public health concern from this herd detection.

Step Outside
Take a shot at trotlining
      If you ever meet someone who really looks down their nose at trotlining, chances are good that they haven't tried it. It may not be the angling equivalent of landing a Tarpon with a flyrod, but it is a lot of fun. Whenever you see one of those huge Yellow Cat heads stuck on a fence post it conjures the image of a trotline sagging under the weight of a big Catfish.

Oakwood 'Community Garden' plows new ground to plant hopes
      Both adults and children from the community of Oakwood came together to begin planting the Project Save a Life community garden. This garden, located beside the Miracle Church on Hwy 79 in Oakwood, will benefi t the senior citizens and shut-ins. Once harvested, the bounty will be distributed by volunteers working with the C.H.A.N.G.E. Youth Center.
