Landowners, boaters urged to be vigilant to halt spread of "world's worst weed"
      The Nature Conservancy Hydrilla, known as the "world's worst weed" came to Texas, as it did to much of North America, through the aquarium trade. While the lush stems of this aquatic plant offer terrific cover for goldfish, they also grow in thick mats that quickly take over entire lakes, crowd out native plants and damage populations of popular sportfish species.

Lone Star Community Center to host Jamboree
      The Lone Star Community Center held its regular meeting on Monday, May 4. With hot weather upon us, there are few activities planned for the next few months. However, one last County Jamboree will take place on May 16. Nick Watson is in charge of the program and will have local walk-on talent begin the evening at 6:00 p.m.

Mother's Day at the Jewett Flea Market
      The Jewett Flea Market seemed "just the place" to celebrate Mother's Day on Sunday, May 10. With beautiful mid-spring weather, crowds flocked to Leon County's number one tourist attraction this weekend. Obviously enjoying the outing were many sets of mothers and daughters as they browsed through the treasures.

      Cinco de Mayo, the celebration of Mexico's Independence Day, has become a much-anticipated event at Buffalo Elementary School. BES has a large percentage of Hispanic students -- currently 43% of the total enrollment -- with a very active, involved group of parents.

Dwayne Myers and Ashley Jameson to wed in June
      Mr. and Mrs. Rex Jameson of Coleman, TX, are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Ashley Jameson, to Dwayne Myers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Myers of Buffalo, TX. Ashley is a graduate of Coleman High School, class of 2005. Ashley is presently in her second of four semesters of Nursing School at the University of Texas at Arlington.

      Nucor Steel held their Earth Day Celebration at their facilities in Jewett on Wednesday, May 6. A lunch was served at the pavilion for workers, management and guests as Nucor renewed its commitment to environmental stewardship.

      The E.E. Wheat Freestone County NAACP will be having their monthly meeting on Thursday, May 14 at 6 p.m. at the Dogan Campus in Fairfield. Lone Star Community Center will host a Country Jamboree on May 16. Walk ons willl begin singing at 6:00 p.m. and food will be served at 5:00. Admission is free.
