Selective thinning good for the health or the forest
      I have heard several individuals questioning why the City is cutting trees in the Community Forest. Simply put, it is for the health of the forest. We must ensure that our kids and grandkids have the same beautiful timberland that we are enjoying.

Airman Timothy Rantala graduates basic training at Lackland AFB
      Air Force Airman Timothy A. Rantala graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

BHS students place among "Best of Texas"
      Buffalo High School academic coordinator Dana Morris reports that several of the school's UIL academic teams competed in a state wide online invitational meet this spring. The competition pitted students from all over the state and from all school sizes in the Best of Texas competition.

TEEA fills Jewett Civic Center for District 8 Spring Conference
      On April 14, 2009 the Jewett Civic Center was filled to the brim with Texas Extension Education Association (TEEA) members for the District 8 Spring Conference. The District includes 16 counties and Judi Kirkpatrick, Mayor of Jewett, welcomed all 174 EE club members and guests present. Leon County did a great job as Host County for all our visitors.

      While the Swine Flu itself may not yet have been identified in this area, there HAVE definitely been secondary effects resulting from the disease which are affecting our schools.

Home and Garden Tour slated for May 16
      Mark your calendars for the 2009 Spring Home Garden Tour on May 16, 2009 sponsored by The Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Leon County. This year's tour features 2 private gardens in the western portion of the county one demonstrating the use of shade plants and the other how to use a pool in the layout.

Railroad trestle repaired but more work to be done
      On Thursday morning, April 23, at about 4:30 in the morning, a train with four locomotive engines and 50 freight cars came upon a bridge at Keechi Creek that was engulfed in flames. News spread quickly and workers began the difficult task of getting trucks and equipment to the site of the accident.
