Oakwood students qualify for Regional UIL meet
      On April 2nd, Oakwood competed in Carthage at Panola College for UIL Academics. Overall, the students did great and four qualified for Regionals. Jocelyn Wil- liams qualified in News, Paige Eldridge qualified in Editorial, and Tori Tucker qualified in Headline Writing. Alias Sardaneta is an alternate for Mathematics.

Buffalo Kindergarteners enjoy Go Texan Day
      Buffalo ISD's youngest students gained a better understanding of their western heritage as they celebrated Go Texan Day last Thursday. Many of the students dressed the part, and they enjoyed activities that included a horseback ride, courtesy of the Champion family. BHS senior National Champion also performed some trick roping for the kiddos.

Oakwood hopes to hire new Chief soon
      Oakwood Mayor Vicki Stroud said the City Council had received several applicants for the Police Chief job which was vacated when Oly Ivy was arrested earlier this month for allegedly tazering his girl friend Amana Juarez.

      Dear Editor, I am against ESD #4 because the means of financing is very discriminatory against property owners. A property owner, which makes up a small percent of Leon County's population, pays for everyone's service. 1. ESD #4 should be financed by a sales tax.

Swine flu near San Antonio
      As of Sunday, April 26 at 3 p.m., there have been two confirmed cases of swine flu in Guadalupe County, just north of San Antonio. The cases were mild and the individuals have made a complete recovery.

Winners of the "Picture a Cure for Cancer" Contest
      Relay for Life of Leon County in partnership with Karen Thomas, State Farm Insurance Agent of Buffalo, sponsored a countywide 4th grade art contest. Each student was asked to draw a picture of what a cure looks like to them. First place was taken by Rishab Rai of Leon Elementary.
