Lady Bison Relays Advance to Regional Meet

Van'Go'photo The Lady Bison track team qualified five members in five events for the Region III meet in Whitehouse on May 1st and 2nd. In addition to the regional berths, Buffalo scored 91 points on their way to a third place finish at the district meet in Groveton last week. Centerville and Trinity came in first and second in the team standings.

Field events and preliminaries were held on Monday. The Lady Bison earned one regional slot and three alternate places during the field events. Desiree Worthy took silver in the long jump, and will compete in Whitehouse for the right to advance to the state meet. Shika Mims was fourth in the long jump which is the alternate position.

Kaila Grissett and Brooke Trahan went four-five in the triple jump. Grissett is first alternate for regionals while Trahan is second alternate.

Samantha Atkinson had the fourth best shot put effort. Atkinson can compete at the regional meet if one of the top three finishers pulls out of the contest. Jalisa Corbin earned fifth place points in the shot put.

Mims and Kelsey Canady qualified for the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash finals with their efforts on Monday.

Thursday, the meet was moved forward as district coaches tried to outrun the rain. The weather held, and the meet was completed.

The Lady Bison opened the evenings festivities with a second place finish in the 400 meter relay. Worthy, Grissett, Trahan and Mims will have the chance to run again the first weekend in May for the coveted eight slots in Austin.

Tristan Brewer ran her best time of the season in the 800 meter run, and came in fifth. Tak Jumsai also competed in the half mile run.

Mims qualified for regional in the 100 meter dash with a second place finish and eight points for the Lady Bison.

The foursome of Worthy, Grissett, Trahan and Mims won the 800 meter relay with their best time thus far, and will represent Buffalo in Whitehouse.

Canady raced to a fifth place finish in the 200 meter dash, and Brewer placed fifth in the 300 meter hurdles. Elsom shaved nine seconds off her 1600 meter run time for fifth place.

Canady joined Worthy, Grissett and Trahan for the 1600 meter relay. Their second place finish qualified the third relay for the Region III meet.

A handful of Lady Bison competed at the junior varsity level on Monday, and earned medals for Buffalo. Katie Runnels won the long jump and the triple jump. She was second in the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash. Emily Grissett edged out teammate Cassie Ferguson for gold in the 400 meter dash. Ferguson earned silver in both the 400 meters and the 800 meter run.
