Leon County WIC office has Open House
      On Thursday, April 16 the Leon County WIC office held an open house to show off its new facility in Centerville. The office has previously been located in Jewett on Highway 79. Kay Jarrett, WIC Director in Bryan said "We are excited to be in Centerville and feel that we are more centrally located than when we were in Jewett.

Leon County Cooks - A Friend Lost
      The first time I met Helen Vidaurri was at the Oakwood School Cafeteria and she had prepared a meal for the Board of Trustees. She had cooked chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, chocolate pie, coconut pie and homemade bread. Everything was made from scratch. No instant potatoes, no pre-breaded meat. She even made her own pie crusts.

Construction begins on FM 1848 completion expected in mid-summer
      Construction has begun on FM 1848, from US 79 to the Freestone County Line, to restore and widen the existing roadway. Motorists who travel this area should expect minor delays and obey all traffic control in the area. This $324,784.68 routine maintenance project is contracted to Big Creek Construction Company. The project is expected to be complete by mid-summer of 2009.

Cub Scouts learn the basics of journalism
      On Tuesday, April 14, Cub Scout Pack 637- which started meeting this year at Bethel Baptist Church each week- visited the high school journalism staff to learn about making a newspaper. This visit would help them complete one of their activities for their badges.

Centerville ISD Board gets a look at damage by vandals
      The Centerville Independent School District Board of Trustees held its regular meeting on April 15, 2009 at the High School Library. After the minutes were read and bills were approved, Superintendent Cathy Nichols showed dozens of pictures of damages done by vandals on the morning of April 6th.

NORTH CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH
      The youth night on Saturday night was a success and all of the youth enjoyed the pizza that was served. They also enjoyed the movie that was shown there and the praise service was enjoyed by all. There is a revival in the offing but the plans aren't yet made known. Keep watching this column for details about who will be the speaker and the inclusive dates.

Ramblings from Centerville Healthcare Center
      Just a little bit late with my report on the Garage Sale. We had a good turn out and did well on the merchandise as well as the bake sale. Again, we thank those who donated and brought baked goods to the event. We also thank those who helped with the sale. Without volunteers like you, we could not have done it.

Black Gospel Festival
      The first annual Black Gospel Festival will take place on May 2 at 6 p.m. at the Pocket Park in Centerville. The event will be open to the public, and partici- pants are asked to bring their own instruments. There will be performances from individuals, singing groups, and church choirs.

DAR Chapter wins state awards
      At the recent Texas State Conference of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonel George Dashiell Chapter won over 50 awards! This is thought to be a record for the chapter.

Hanley-Davis Engagement Announced
     Sherry and Jerry Hanley would like to announce the engagement of their daughter, Jill Kristine, to Donald A. Davis, the son of Cheryl and Donald L. Davis of La Porte, TX. Jill is a 1995 graduate of Sam Houston State University and is currently an intermdiate school teacher in Pasadena, TX. Don is a 2001 Graduate of Excelsior College and is in the U.S. Navy currently stationed in Mayport, FL. The couple plan a June wedding and will make their home in Jacksonville, FL.
