Bison win squeeker in Onalaska
Ryan Read threw eight strikeouts in the Bison's come-frombehind victory. With thunderstorms wrecking havoc on the ball game schedule late last week, the Buffalo Bison only managed to get in one game -- but it was a good one. Tuesday's matchup with Onalaska was moved from a home game to a road trip at the last minute, in order to accommodate the Bulldogs' conflict with their livestock show. The Bison apparently did not need a home field advantage to pull off a come-from-behind win, 11-10.
Senior Kirby McNair was the starting pitcher for the Bison, and Onalaska drew first blood with a four-run opening inning.
Buffalo's offense got started in the second inning and BHS push two runs across the plate, scoring Logan Beard and Harley Eakin. Onalaska, however, added three runs in their at-bat to hold a 7-2 lead after two innings.
Sophomore Ryan Read took the mound for Buffalo in the third and proved to be the Man of the Hour, as he threw two strikeouts in each of the next four innings. The Bison defense allowed no runs in the third and fourth innings. Travis King scored in the third, and then Read and Jesus Davis came across the plate in the 4th, closing the gap to trail by only two, 5-7.
A big fifth inning saw Aaron Bell, Beard, Jorge Herrera, Eakin and Joe Brewer score Bison runs. Onalaska added one in the bottom of the inning, but the Bison had taken the lead, 10-8.
Both teams were scoreless in the sixth, and the Bison added a much-needed insurance run in the top of the seventh. Bell doubled, then heads-up base running by the junior gave the Bison Run #11, and it proved to be a big one. King pitched the final inning and Onalaska mounted a solid threat, but the Bison defense secured the win by allowing them only two runs.
Read threw 8 strikeouts in four innings, allowed 2 hits and one walk. McNair and King each threw one strikeout. Offensive highlights included a triple by Read, Bell with a double and a single, and singles by Beard (2), Eakin (2), Davis (1) and King (1).
THIS WEEK: The Bison are scheduled to travel to Anderson-Shiro for a makeup game on Monday, then hit the road again on Tuesday to play New Waverly. The Bison/ Tigers rematch in Centerville has been moved from Friday to Saturday at 6:30, to accommodate the Leon County Livestock Show on Friday night.
