Last call for History of Leon County, Volume II

By Sherry Matney

History of Leon County Texas, Volume I is a rich source of history, folklore and memorabilia. Sherry's Shots History of Leon County Texas, Volume I is a rich source of history, folklore and memorabilia. Sherry's Shots "Leon County is a rural, sparsely populated 1,102 square mile area of east central Texas. Land elevations range from 150 to 500 feet. The growing season is 270 days and temperatures average 38 degrees in January and 85 degrees in July. Annual rainfall average 40.3 inches." Excerpt from History of Leon County, Volume I.

In 1986 an ambitious group of Leon County citizens called the Leon County Genealogical Society published a beautiful book called History of Leon County, Volume I. The Book contains 929 pages, measures 12" X 9" X 2- ½" and is full of stories, poetry and pictures about towns, churches, schools, cemeteries and citizens of Leon County.

Although to some it seems that 1986 was just yesterday, the truth is an entire generation has been born, started school, graduated, got married and started families, since that year. Consequently, it is time for another volume. And don't think that because someone published your family history in the first volume there is nothing left for you to do.

No one from the generation mentioned in the last paragraph is discussed in the first book, and chances are few from the generation before. And what about the large number who have moved to Leon County within the past 23 years. These stories deserve to be immortalized in the new publication.

Leon County is rich with history. If you would like to know the origins of the county's cities, go to Volume I. What about reading some juicy stories of gunfights and rowdy characters? Yep, Volume I.

Do yourself and your family a huge favor and send a story in for Volume II. History is preserved and families are bonded through submitting and reading stories about grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

The Leon County Genealogical Society is getting ready to go to press but is still open to accept stories and pictures. To reach someone at the LCGS email lcgs@snrwireless. com. But hurry, this is the last call for material.
