BJHS boys 'burning up the track'

The Buffalo Junior High boys track teams blew away the competition at the Groveton Relays last Friday, March 6. The eighth graders scored 165 points, edging out second place Teague (151). In the seventh grade competition, the Bisons' 165 points smoked everyone. Teague was second again with 98 points.

EIGHTH GRADERS

In the field events, Travis Cunningham won the LONG JUMP and took 5th in the HIGH JUMP. Dominic Jackson and Jose Dominguez finished one-two in the SHOT PUT, and Jackson followed with 4th in the DISCUS. TRIPLE JUMPERS Bryce Strack and Tate Hartley took 2nd and 5th, respectively.

On the track, distance men Dalton Helmcamp and Blake Strack placed 3rd and 4th in 2400M run. Helmcamp was 5th in the 1600M RUN (1 mile). In the 800M RUN Dakota Lewis was 2nd; the 400M Race saw Cunningham finish in 1st and Hartley in 3rd. In the 300M HURDLES, Jesus Lopez took 2nd and Lewis was right on his heels in 3rd. Lopez also medaled in the 100M HURDLES with a 3rd place finish. Cain Hayes was 2nd in the 200M DASH. Jose Dominguez won the 100M SPRINT and Bryce Strack was 6th in that race.

The Bison relay teams helped BJHS nail down the meet championship. The 4x100M RELAY (Cunningham, Hayes, Bryce Strack and Dominguez) finished 1st, as did the 4x400M RELAY (Dominguez, Hayes, Hartley and Cunningham) in a time of 4:04. The 4x200M RELAY Team (Bryce Strack, Jackson, Hartley and Lopez) took 4th.

SEVENTH GRADERS

Several Bison were standouts in the field events. Tyler Adams won the HIGH JUMP and Logan Jones took 4th. Adams followed with a 3rd in TRIPLE JUMP. In the LONG JUMP event, Keith Carter took 2nd and Jones garnered another 4th place finish. Brendon Smith finished 3rd in DISCUS, and in the SHOT PUT Carter took fourth and Smith finished right behind him in 5th.

On the track, Kyle Read was 3rd in the 2400M RUN, and placed 5th at the 1600M distance. In the 800M RACE Trent Martin and Mason Allen took 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Brendon Smith won both the 100M and 300M HURDLES. Jones sprinted to a first place finish in the 100M DASH, and Dustin Sheffield finished 4th. Jones also won the 400M RACE, and Sheffield was 5th at that distance.

In the 200M DASH, Sheffield finished 2nd and Carter was 3rd.

The youngest Bison relay teams also shined. The 4x400M RELAY team of Brendon Smith, Trent Martin, Adam Simpson and Logan Jones finished 1st. The 4x200M RELAY team (Carter, Simpson, Adams and Allen) finished 4th and and the 4x100M RELAY team (Carter, Adams, Martin and Allen) took 3rd.

Much-needed rains caused the cancellation of the Lovelady track meets this past Friday, so the next outing for the junior high tracksters will be the Centerville meet, Friday, March 20th.
