Josephine Hardy

Funeral services for Josephine Burroughs Hardy, age 94, of Buffalo, Texas were held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at the Walters Buffalo Funeral Home in Buffalo, Texas. Dr. David Kimberly, pastor of First Baptist Church in Buffalo, officiated at the service and interment was in the Buffalo Cemetery.

Josephine Burroughs Hardy was born April 10, 1914 in Buffalo and was the youngest of nine children born to Robert Edgar Burroughs and Rebecca (Holleman) Burroughs. She graduated from Buffalo High School in 1931. In recent years she has been the oldest graduate attending the Buffalo Ex-Students Homecoming. She received a Bachelor of Arts and Master Degrees from Sam Houston University. She began her twenty-seven teaching year career as a high school teacher in a small community near Palestine called Woodhouse. She later taught in Cleveland, Texas, Farrar, Texas and, in 1958, she returned to her alma mater, Buffalo High School, where she remained for fifteen years until her retirement in 1973.

She married Charles K. Hardy in July 1943. He was a local businessman who preceded her in death in 1958.

Mrs. Hardy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Buffalo. Her hobbies included: being with family and friends, reading, world-wide traveling and genealogy. She enjoyed her membership in The Daughters of the American Revolution, The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, The United Daughters of the Confederacy and Hood's Texas Brigade Association. Mrs. Josephine passed away Sunday, February 22, 2009 in Fairfield.

Survivors include her daughter, Becky Pickens and husband, Mike Pickens of Buffalo, Texas; son, Charles Hardy and wife, Concepcion of Kirbyville, Texas; three grandchildren, Rachel Cox, Rebecca Henson, and Robert Pickens; three greatgrandchildren, Savanna Cox, Victoria Cox, Josie Henson; beloved nieces and nephews and an extended family who called her "Grandma."
