LCRTA discusses membership benefit options
      The Leon County Retired Teachers Association met for their February meeting on Wednesday, February 25 at the Municipal Building in Centerville. The 12:00 meeting began with a delicious luncheon served by February host and hostesses: Al Campbell, Carol Ball, Dorothy Bottoms and Beth Jones.

      02/05- Minor Accident US 79 in front of post office. No injuries, minor damage. 02/06- Assist LCSO- Person in roadway US 79 near CR 238. Unable to locate 02/07- Stray dog shot- 634 S. Main St. Dog ran in house, owner shot. No offense committed. 02/10- Domestic Disturbance at 718 Academy Hill Rd.

Texas Monthly Oil and Gas Statistics
      JANUARY PERMITS TO DRILL The Commission issued a total of 1,264 original drilling permits in January 2009 compared to 1,760 in January 2008. The January total included 1,062 permits to drill new oil and gas wells, 42 to re-enter existing well bores, and 160 for re-completions.

DWI prosecution event draws crowd to Leon County
      Leon County, in cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation, recently played host to the Texas District and County Attorneys Association (TDCAA) Regional DWI Training on February 17th. The day-long training session was held on the third floor of the Annex II building, with approximately 100 in attendance.

Commissioners allow exemptions to burn ban -- with conditions
      As the combination of dry and windy conditions raise the danger of fire in our county, the Leon County commissioners have placed a burn ban in effect. This drought has continued well into the spring, however, and some agricultural-related burning is needed at this time. At last week's meeting of the Commissioners Court, therefore, an exemption agreement was approved.

Clint Black to sing on Leon County night
      The Area Go Texan and Houston Metro Go Texan committees honor subcommittees each night during the Show with participation in the Grand Entry as well as spotlight recognition for their efforts to raise money for scholarships and generate awareness for the Show in their counties and areas. The entertainer for Leon County night is Clint Black.

Buffalo VFD
      February 23 Montie Morris, Jake Simpson, Marshall Robinson, Chance Vaughn, Kevin Raboin, Brandon Lack, and Jacob Holcomb responded to 18625 FM 542 to assist Oakwood VFD on a structure fire. When Buffalo VFD arrived on scene the structure was totally engulfed in flames. The members of the Buffalo VFD worked with Oakwood VFD to extinguish the fire.

      March holds a special place in the hearts of East Texas anglers. As the first Redbuds begin to bloom, the White Bass will start their difficult journey from the rivers into the creeks to spawn. The fishing will begin in earnest at the Lock and Dam and soon it will be hard to find elbow room along the Trinity River banks there.
