THSRA Region V and X Rodeo Updates
      11 Buffalo's Dakota Champion competes in REGION X, and he had a big day in McGregor at Rodeo #6, where he finished in the Top Ten in all three of his events. Champion finished 2nd in STEER WRESTLING with a 16.00 take-down, and he continues to lead that event. He also placed 3rd in CALF ROPING with a 12.660, and teamed up with Megan Vincik of Liberty Hill for a 16.

THSRA News -- Region IX February Rodeo Update
      Area high school rodeo athletes were plenty busy in February with three THSRA rodeo competitions: Rodeo #8 in Crockett on 2-01, #9 in Liberty on 2-15 and #10 in Crockett on 2-22-09. As their season winds down, several Leon County kids have risen to the top 'o the heap in their respective events.

Leon JV Cougars fall to Franklin Lions in season finale
      The Cougars suffered a heartbreaking 30-29 loss to the Franklin Lions in the Leon gym on February 17 to close out their season on a sour note. The Cougar led 12-4 after the first period and had a 20-11 advantage at half time. The Lions came on strong in the third period and trailed by four entering the fourth period.

      This week in MGA play on February 18, in Two- Man Best Ball play, the winners were: - First Place - Robert Beevers and Rick Shuff - Second - Bob Tibbits and Morris Pegues - Third - Bennie Yohe and Wayne Brougher - Fourth - J.L.

BHS fields young baseball team
      Baseball season is underway and the 2009 BHS squad is coached by Mark Read and Assistant Coaches Jack Ard and Warren Ringland. The Bison are young, boasting only three seniors among the 24-man squad. The Bison scrimmaged Teague, Normangee and Grapeland last week, and had their first game on Monday night at Normangee.

Normangee Panthers AND Lady Panthers advance to State playoffs
      The Panthers finished third in District 2A and will face Sabine Pass on Tuesday February 24 in Woodville at 7:30 p.m. The Panthers had a very good year under Coach Joe Woodard and are looking forward to the playoffs. The Lady Panthers were undefeated in District 22A and drew a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

BHS Powerlifters compete at Mexia
      The BHS powerlifting team competed in Mexia last Saturday, and several lifters enjoyed good success. Neftaly Soria was the highest-placing Bison. He took third in the 123-lb weight division. Jared Hawthorne took 4th place at the 220-lb class. Calvin Young (132-lbs class) and Jorge Herrera (148- lb class) both took 7th in their group.

Leon Cougars fall victim to Franklin
      The Leon Cougars played host to the Franklin Lions on February 17 and came up on the short end of the 70-58 score in the final fame for the Cougars. Franklin held a one point lead after the first period and increased that to a 37-30 score at half time. The lead ballooned to 55-42 as the fourth period began but the Cougars could not mount a rally and fell 70-58.

JV men fall to New Waverly in season finale
      The junior varsity Bison men faced a tough opponent in the season finale. New Waverly High School's varsity is ranked #1 in the state, and their JV team would be able to hold their own at the varsity level, boasting both speed and shooters.

Leon Lady Cougars win area championship
      The Leon Lady Cougars defeated the Arp lady Tigers 64- 47 on February 16 and the Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs 55- 45 on February 21 to win the area championship and earned the right to play Woden at Lon Morris Junior College in Jacksonville on February 24 at 8:00 pm with the winner advancing to the regional's at Tyler Junior College on February 27 and 28.

Oakwood Lady Panthers win Area Championship
      The Oakwood Lady Panthers steamrolled over the Ector Lady Eagles 73-48 in Wills Point on Friday February 20 before a large crowd from Oakwood. The Lady Panthers started off strong with a full court press and rolled to a 17-6 lead after the first period and increased the margin at halftime to 36-13.

Lady Bison win pool at Ellis Cnty Tournament
      Coach Tracy Harrison practiced this week with her whole softball team for the first time since last May. After three short days of practice, the Lady Bison took the 2009 version on the road to compete in the Ellis County Tournament in Waxahachie.

Bison wrap up roundball season
      The Bison varsity basketball team wrapped up the 2009 season with a tough assignment -- the State's Number One ranked New Waverly Bulldogs in their home gym. No one had any illlusions about the challenge ahead of them, but Buffalo's youngsters -- and a good crowd of fans -- gamely made the two-hour trip on Tuesday and the guys gave their all.
