Leon Lady Cougars lose to Marlin

Leon's Monique Dorsey (2) puts on the brakes quickly. Sherry's Shots The Leon Lady Cougars lost to the Marlin Bulldogs 59- 54 in a game that decided the district 20AA championship. The Cougars came into the game with their only loss in district to the Lady Dogs on January 23 in Marlin. The game was played before a packed house in the Leon gym.

The Cougars had a three point lead going into the second period but the Dogs tied the game at half time. The Dogs had a three point lead with a few seconds left but Allison Carrigan sank a long three pointer to tie the game at intermission as the buzzer sounded. The Cougars opened up a seven point advantage going into the fourth quarter and seemed to have the game under control.

The height advantage and the muscle of the Dogs finally prevailed in the decisive fourth period as the Dogs dominated the Cougars and rallied for a 59-54 victory. The win gave the Dogs a perfect 10-0 mark in district play and the Cougars came in second with an 8-2 record. Marlin will have a week off before they play their first game in the play offs. The Cougars put up a good fight and could have won if a few more shots had fallen.

Chelsie Padgett had a good game with 18 points and 12 rebounds followed closely by Megan Wood and Ashley Shouldham with 11 points each. Coach J.D. Foley had a season record of 20-8 and 8-2 in district play. The season is not over as the Cougars travel to Jacksonville to play Arp on February 16. Good luck to the Cougars and Lady Dogs as they begin the state play offs. Perhaps they will meet again in the playoffs and this time the game might have a different ending.
