Oakwood Lady Panthers romp in first round of playoffs

Sherry's Shots The Oakwood Lady Panthers ended their regular season as co-champions of District 14A with Neches. In the latest 1A Division II State rankings, Neches is ranked #2 and Oakwood #3.

The Lady Panthers traveled to Tyler Junior College on February 16 to face third place Union Hill Lady Bulldogs scoring an overwhelming victory, 102 to 25. In the early moments of the game it was apparent that the Lady Bulldogs were no match for the quicker more athletic Lady Panthers. The full court press by the Lady Panthers produced numerous turnovers in the first quarter resulting in multiple baskets. This created a 26 to 3 margin at the end of the first period.

Coach Lori Shead pulled her starters at the beginning of the second period and substituted freely for the remainder of the game. The substitutes scored at will during the second period and the lead was 33 points at halftime.

The Lady Panthers increased their advantage to 50 at the end of the third quarter and scored 35 additional points in the fourth period. Jessica Blair broke the 100 point barrier by sinking two consecutive free throws. The last point of the game was scored by Victoria Duck when she made a free throw bringing Oakwood's total score to 102.

The tenacious defense of the Lady Panthers resulted in 35 steals throughout the game.

The Lady Panther offense was led by Felicia Williams, Tori and Taylor Tucker. Felicia had 18 points and 3 steals and Tori matched her with 18 and 7. Taylor Tucker scored 17 with 6 steals. Tiara Tucker had 9 points and 4 steals. Angela Johnson scored 8 points and

had 3 steals. Ava Walker 8 points, 2 steals; Destiny Blair 6 points, 1 steal; Kalen Blair 6 points, 2 steals; Victoria Duck 5 points, 2 steals.Jessica Blair 3 points, 2 steals; Christina Hudson 2 points, 1 steal; and Nakeithia Crenshaw 2 points and 1 steal.

The victory brought the Lady Panther season record to 30-2.

In the second round of state playoffs the Lady Panthers travel to Wills Point to play Ector on Friday, February 20.
