Limestone Station and Navarro College create area technical center

Jewett, TX, January 12, 2009—NRG Texas' Limestone Electric Generating Station and Navarro College are partnering to establish an Area Technical Center (ATC) at the Limestone facility near Jewett, Texas. The ATC provides high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to gain invaluable employment skills and knowledge through a Power Plant Operations and Maintenance Certificate, an important credential for positions in energy and other industries.

The first class of 20 students is scheduled to begin tonight.

Limestone Station will provide classrooms and equipment and will pay a portion of qualifying students' tuition. Navarro College will provide the certified curriculum and college instructors for the classes to be held at the ATC.

"Having a college-level technical center at the Limestone facility will provide students in the surrounding communities the opportunity to receive quality industrial and technical instruction and training close to their schools and homes," said Gary Mechler, Plant Manager at the Limestone facility. "Graduates of the program will possess a valuable certificate that will enhance their employability in high-paying jobs with industries in the area and provide NRG Texas and other local industries with a pool of trained prospective job applicants."

"There is need for high paying jobs in our communities and this program will offer students an opportunity to prepare themselves for meaningful employment."

Dr. Sanchez, Gary Mechler and other NRG Texas, Limestone and Navarro College leadership met this past summer to form the partnership to develop the ATC concept.

Following the meeting, John Fry, Training Specialist at the Limestone Plant and Guy Featherston, Dean of Navarro College South, worked closely together to advance the project including meeting with leaders from area Independent School Districts, local industries, and Workforce Solutions for the Heart of Texas as well as attending career days and meeting with local school students and parents to provide information about the program. Through the efforts of these two organizations, on January 12, 2009, the ATC will become a reality.
